Welcome Back to Preschool and Nursery Classes

The heavy debate regarding the dangers of constant use of iPads and TVs during early childhood development has only gotten more heated. Where do you stand?

We welcome the nursery students and preschoolers and are now looking forward to the One-to-One toddler classes beginning next week. We applaud the savvy families that have signed up for One-to-One classes and have given their thumbs-up to active, hands-on learning, social development and language, motor, and sensory stimulation in our small, diverse, child-centered classes.

Mindfulness Afterschool

An aspect of mindfulness, a technique making its way into more and more curricula lately, is simply living in the moment… Turning off… Enjoying the now… Freeing your mind of anxiety or expectation.

Mindfulness has been related to higher self-esteem, feeling more secure, heightened awareness, improved attentiveness, and healthier relationships, as well as better physical well-being. When our students are encouraged to just relax and chat with friends, at first some resist the new concept, because they are so used to running from one obligation to the next. But, eventually you notice them get comfortable and settle into the tranquility. While sitting back for lunch on a cool day last week, falling into the peaceful moment gave us a chance to notice a squirrel trying to join the camp.

Open Houses and Tours

What kind of school environment are you looking for? Is our Early Childhood Program the best fit for your family? Would you like to hear more about our philosophies? We invite you to attend our Saturday Open House Tours as a way to familiarize yourself with our facilities, programs, and philosophy. If you have never been explained the education benefits of our child-centered approach, play-based atmosphere, and flexible, individualized curriculum, this will be a great event to attend.

We welcome new families in Upper Manhattan, Manhattan Valley, and Morningside Heights, as well as families living in northern locales of Washington Heights, Riverdale and Inwood and southern locales of Upper West Side.

Last Saturday, families that have recently moved to the area mingled with their savvy neighbors, exchanging advice, encouragement, and contact information after attending the tour with Director of Programs, Marie Del Tejo.

Human Hungry Hungry Hippos

For the first Afterschool Assembly, afterschoolers competed in Human Hungry Hungry Hippos! Thanks to their energy and Brian’s gusto, Kindergarteners won the game with 67 balls “eaten”!

The kids also practiced WESTI, a great way to loosen up and get comfortable meeting new people. It stands for Warm smile, Eye contact, Shake hands--Introduce yourself, Tell them how you feel--ask for their name, Introduce them to another camper or staff. It is all part of how ACT Afterschool will become your child’s home away from home this year – and a haven of learning, play, and social development.

ACT's Animal Family Greets New and Returning Students

Preschool staff are arranging the classroom in anticipation for students' arrival on Wednesday, September 16th. ACT Preschool parents, expect a personalized letter to your child from the teachers in the mail. Little Bear, our furriest classroom companion, is also looking forward to a full room of new friends. Our ACT animal family consists of 3 guinea pigs named Little Bear, Roo and Spike, a gecko named Rufus and JJ the Rabbit. A great way to support learning and child development is with animal life. Nurturing a pet gives children a chance to develop trust, compassion, self-confidence, responsible behavior and respect for life.

Afterschool jumped two feet first into the new year, learning with our new large-size chess set in the game center, chatting away with new friends, and creating classroom spaces that they can call a home away from home.

Afterschool returns to the ACT Nature Center!

While the weather is warm, afterschoolers work together to water, weed and prune plants in the ACT Garden and Nature Center. They take advantage of the garden by using it for explorations of natural science but also by gathering the produce—lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, basil, rosemary and other herbs—for their snack. After their gardening, it was off to the playground. What a great way to wind down after the first day of school.
